What Is A Veterinary Assistant?
Most veterinary assistants are attracted to this position because of their genuine love of animals. They have a desire to help the injured and sick, and contribute to the prevention of illnesses within the animal kingdom.
The veterinary assistant works under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian or veterinary technician who determines the scope of their activities.
Veterinary assistants can work in single-vet offices, at zoos, animal hospitals, kennels, rehabilitation shelters, research laboratories and animal clinics or, with mobile vet services visiting farms and ranches.
A veterinary assistant's responsibilities can vary, depending upon the facility where they are employed, but all assistants are normally required to perform a set of basic duties.
General Overview of Vet Assistant Duties:
• Providing basic care for animals: feeding, watering, exercising, or giving prescribed medications.
• Grooming of animals: cleaning ears, bathing, brushing or trimming nails.
• Cleaning: animal cages, exam and surgical equipment, exam tables, and general disinfecting.
• Help in restraining animals for exams, vaccinations, procedures, or x-rays.
• Obtain samples for lab tests: ear swabs, fecal, urine and blood. (Some assistants learn to perform the basic lab tests on these materials.)
Clerical duties: answer phones, book appointments, greet clients, escort clients to exam rooms, process payments, and assemble required prescription packages. Keeping records that chart weight, temperature, etc. may also be part of the duties.
It is important to understand the difference between a veterinary assistant, veterinary technician, and veterinary technologist.
A veterinary assistant is the entry-level position for most individuals who would like to become a technician or a veterinarian. An assistant is not required to take an exam for accreditation or have any college background.
