What is Tourism Management?
People in tourism management are typically employed by hotels, holiday resorts and travel agencies to help tourists make all manner of travel-related decisions.
Skill Requirements
Tourism managers need to like people; they need to be friendly, personable, engaging and well-informed. They also need to be good managers; which requires communication and organisational skills. Computer skills in any industry are a given and the travel and tourism industry is no different. A basic grasp of financial and accounting principles is also recommended as managers will be have to calculate discounts and collect payments for services and tickets. Some of these skills can't be taught but communication, organisation, negotiation, computer and financial skills are included in our online travel and tourism courses.
Tasks
Tourism managers usually need to be proactive in their jobs, for instance, they may need to meet people in hotel lobbies or at airports or come to the aid of people who look lost. They need to be able to quickly develop rapport with clients no matter how difficult or ornery their personalities. They must maintain accurate records of transactions and keep an adequate supply of current promotional materials. A sizeable portion of tourism management time is taken up with visits to local merchants and tourist attractions to negotiate mutually beneficial deals that generate profits and increase traffic for all companies concerned.
Work Conditions
Tourism management jobs can be performed just about anywhere, from hotel lobbies and airport waiting areas to travel agency offices and freestanding kiosks in heavily populated tourist areas. The atmosphere is usually energetic and upbeat, fuelled by the positive attitudes of people seeking fun and enjoyment. A good part of the job requires standing or walking around to interact with potential customers. Tourism managers may be required to wear casual business attire or clothes that reflect a particular event they are promoting. Hours are usually erratic and often include evenings, weekends and holidays.
