CAPE TOWN, 6 JULY 2011 - Distance tuition institutions have come under the media spotlight recently as a result of alleged malpractices. The source of the allegations originates from student ranks, enrolled at certain institutions, which have been at the short end of unfair administrative practices, according to reports. While the allegations of malpractice are mainly restricted to a few isolated instances at certain institutions, subjective media speculation affects the entire industry, including reputable institutions.

The focus of unfavourable publicity is mainly on private tertiary institutions, in business with a clear profit motive. This is not illegal nor unethical, as most tertiary institutions function independently with the autonomy to generate and govern its own finances. As is the case in every industry, there will always be isolated instances of malpractice. The problem with this is that every member of such an industry is affected by generalized misconceptions created by subjective and negative publications.
