What is Farm Management?

Farm management deals with the organisation and operation of a farm to maximise profits on an ongoing basis. Farmers need to adapt their business approach regularly to keep abreast of changes in farming methods, price variability and available resources. Farm management is the science which deals with the analysis of farming resources, alternatives, choices and opportunities within the framework of resource restrictions, and the social and personal constraints of the farming business.

All this information is integrated and synthesised to increase the farm's profitability, with the ultimate aim to raise the standard of living those dependent on the farm.

Note that farm management isn't limited to maximising income. It also takes into account the goals and objectives of individual farmers and so deals with the people or managers and decision-makers charged with farming and agricultural production. Its focus is people rather than crops or livestock.

Farm management is a decision-making science. It determines the courses of action the farm requires to operate efficiently and effectively. Decisions include:

  • What to produce or what combination of enterprises to follow?
  • How much to produce and what is the most profitable level of production?
  • What should be the size of an individual enterprise, which, in turn, will determine the best overall size of the farm business?
  • What methods of production (production practices or what type of quality of inputs and their combination) should be used?
  • What and where to market?
