What Is Advertising and Marketing Management?

Advertising and marketing management may sound very similar, and they are, but there are differences between the two courses that make for two very different career paths.

Advertising management courses pave the way for a flourishing career in the advertising industry. Advertising and promotions managers may work for a PR agency or a media outlet, or they may be hired directly by a company to develop promotional strategies for products, services and the brand. Advertising management overlooks the entire advertising process, which starts with market research and continues through advertising, sales, and measuring return on investment (ROI).

Advertising management forms an integral part of the marketing department, but the primary difference between the two is that marketers are more concerned with market research and evaluation while advertisers focus on promotion. Many large companies now require some staff members to complete advertising and marketing management courses so they can keep the services in-house, but out-sourcing is still a very common practice.

Marketing management is a business discipline which focuses on the practical application of marketing techniques and the management of a firm's marketing resources and activities. Marketing managers are responsible for influencing the level, timing, and composition of customer demand. It's important to note, however, that the role of a marketing manager varies according to business size, corporate culture, and industry. For example, in a large consumer products company marketing managers may act as the overall general manager of their assigned product.
